Abstract
The similarity of a large fraction of amino acid residues of human protein sequences with that of other species implies that the mutations altering those amino acids were purged through natural selection during the evolution of the human lineage. The deleterious effect of amino acid replacement mutations in human population is manifested by the association of many of these with genetic diseases.
