Abstract

This chapter investigates social media posts related to gender-based violence against female travellers within the #MeToo movement. The sexualization of the hotel space that renders female travellers/guests at risk of and being responsible for sexual violence emerges as a key finding with actionable implications. This chapter does not provide a 'big data' analysis. Rather, the intentions of this chapter are to renew our understanding of gender-based violence in tourism by engaging in the latest feminist discourse, and to identify the extent to which female travel safety is featured in the #MeToo movement. The implications of #MeToo in raising awareness of female travel safety and stimulating changes towards a safer tourism space for women are discussed.
