Abstract

This· chapter introduces the reader to the health literacy concept by exploring the development and use of health literacy in conjunction with inclusive practice to facilitate the promotion and management of health. Health literacy is an important social determinant of health. A person's health literacy; that is, their health knowledge, skills and abilities, will significantly affect the delivery and understanding of professional and therapeutic communication, subsequently influencing health behaviour and outcomes. The chapter is divided into three sections. First, the context of health literacy, health is described and the determinants of health are identified. The relevance of health literacy to therapeutic and inter-professional communication is described. Second, the development of health literacy is summarised and definitions provided. The summary of the development includes the current definition of health literacy and its limitations with respect to inclusive practice. Measurement of health literacy is discussed highlighting the usefulness and limitations of these tools. Variations in the health literacy of individuals are explored. Key relationships between health literacy and promotion and support of inclusive practice - at individual, professional and system levels - including the responsibilities of health professionals to utilise an understanding of the impact of health literacy to overcome barriers are further investigated. Finally, health literacy in relation to the provision of relevant and appropriate health information to individuals and populations is discussed and debated, regarding the facilitation of active participation of individuals/groups in their own promotion of health..
