Abstract

It is difficult to obtain detailed financial accounts for national parks agencies, in Australia as elsewhere (Craigie and Pressey, 2022; Buckley et al., 2001, 2012). Costs such as roads and salaries are not partitioned between conservation and visitor management. Wildfire control costs have unpredictable timing and drain annual budgets. Fires, floods and landslides lead to partial closures until funds can be raised for repairs. Costs associated with extreme weather events are increasing as a result of climate change.
