Abstract
India has never been content with mere sovereignty. It has always wanted more: global acknowledgement of its exceptional qualities and a seat at all the highest tables. This pursuit of major power status is one of the constants of India's foreign policy. Such recognition was sought in the 1950s and 1960s, when the country was poor and relatively weak, and it is still being pursued by what is now a restless, richer and rising power.
