This non‐interventional, national on‐line survey of 1541 parents of children aged 2–15 years sought to understand parents’ perceptions of allergic rhinitis (AR). Children were allocated to case (AR, n=1040) or control (No AR, n=501) groups based on a screening questionnaire. The survey questionnaire elicited data on parents’ beliefs about AR and current management practices. Most parents believed that AR could significantly impair wellbeing, but understanding of its causes was poor (Table). Amongst AR cases, parental recognition of AR was suboptimal: parents reported a history of AR in only 17% (178/1040) of case children. Amongst AR cases currently being treated (n=939), doctors (53%) and pharmacists (23%) were the main sources of treatment advice; 9% of children were managed based on parental decision. In children currently medicating, on average 1.40 medicines were being used; most used antihistamines (44% non‐sedating, 8% sedating) while 16% used intranasal corticosteroids. Half (49.5%, 515/1040) of AR case children reported adequate symptom control overall and less in children taking sedating antihistamines. Parents harbour many misconceptions about AR, which may explain why its burden in children remains so high. Solutions to better engage with parents should be explored.
