Abstract
The focus of this PhD project is on the experiences of Filipino migrant musicians who perform cover music in key cities in Australia – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. My research addresses the issues of identity, musicality and translocality as these relate to Filipino musicians who migrate to Australia. In particular, the research is interested in understanding how Filipino musicians carry out their identity and musicality (attributes that make them good cover artists, performers or musicians) as migrants, and how this is integrated with labour (music performance as a commodity or with commercial value) and/or creativity (music performance as artistic or aesthetic output). I also aim to understand the ways in which they negotiate their position within the Australian music ecosystem as cover musicians. This project situates the musical practices and identities of Filipino musicians in cultural sociology and popular music literature as well as in the context of the Australian cultural and creative industries. Moreover, this research also analyses the transnationality of Filipino migrant musicians and how their circumstances affect their musical practices and experiences as (labour) migrants in Australia. To conduct the research, I utilised qualitative research methods such as interviews and participant observation. To apply such methods in a more contextualised discussion, I used a localised in-depth interview (pakikipagkuwentuhan) and participant observation (pakikilahok), ensuring that my positionalities as Filipino, musician and migrant would remain front and centre in this research.
