Abstract

Violence against women is the most pervasive human rights violation in the world and a major cause of death and disability. In recent years, attention has focused on intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy due to its prevalence, health consequences and intervention potential. Worldwide, many instances of IPV during pregnancy remain hidden and underreported; therefore, the actual true figures of violence against women in pregnancy remain unknown. Nonetheless, what is known is that violence perpetrated by an intimate partner can begin, escalate and/or intensify during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Women who encounter IPV during pregnancy are at an increased risk of experiencing multiple poor morbidities and long-term consequences. International research indicates that IPV during pregnancy may lead to death, miscarriage, low birth weight, preterm labour, anxiety, depression as well as severe physical injuries and high-risk pregnancies. Currently, there is still inadequate research on the factors and circumstances that enable women to disclose and seek support when experiencing IPV during pregnancy. This chapter provides an overview of the main issues relevant to understanding IPV during pregnancy and the post-partum period; it explores the prevalence of IPV in pregnancy, identifies the health risks to the woman and her unborn baby and considers the role of the midwife and other health professionals in supporting women at this time.
