Abstract

Food literacy captures the multidimensional ways individuals navigate food systems and environments in their daily lives. Critical food literacy provides individuals with a critical awareness of contemporary food issues and food systems challenges to support food environment interaction. This chapter outlines the inextricably linked food literacy aspects, including education, knowledge, skills, society and culture, and attitudes, beliefs, and decisions, which include topics such as sustainability, agriculture, consumerism, business, technology, food systems, and public health. The importance of food literacy to these topics will be explained while justifying its importance for participating in everyday life, negotiating global challenges, maintaining food security, and innovating within the food literacy space. Effective food literacy education and the modern innovations that embed food literacy, including social media, gamification, mobile applications, and meal kit subscriptions, will also be highlighted. A key conclusion that will be drawn is the necessity of food literacy competency society.
