Abstract

This chapter reflects on how the rapid uptake of large numbers of students being enrolled in university courses created organisational change in Australian universities and placed unprecedented pressures on university academics. In the latter part of the 20th century, numbers of students all over the world seeking university education greatly increased. This significant increase has been termed the massification of higher education. The voices of the featured academics in this chapter provide insights into the lived experience and perceptions of Australian academics on the changing academic work in universities. Six themes were generated from the conversations related to the massification of higher education that impact on university academic work: (a) changing mode of delivery, (b) practical difficulties academics face with increasing student numbers, (c) changing application of advanced Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), (d) changing academic workload, (e) changing perceptions and behaviour of university learners, and (f) changing academic–student interactions. This chapter shares insights about each of these themes together with participants’ verbatim quotes that illustrate and highlight their lived experiences.
