Abstract
TeamUP is a whole of curriculum educational enhancement strategy which was embedded into a Bachelor of Midwifery program at a regional university. This initiative was instigated in recognition of the need for all health professionals to have effective teamwork skills, not only for initial employability but also for their future success in the workplace. Research shows when health care cultures emphasise teamwork, group affiliation and coordination, there are improved health outcomes for clients, less bullying and greater implementation of quality improvement practices. Despite this readily articulated need, teamwork skills are rarely the focus of teaching and assessment in undergraduate health education courses. One way for students to practise and gain feedback on their team skills is to have them engage in team-based assessment tasks. Team-based assessments aim to develop the students’ communication and teamwork skills in being able to work successfully in intra and Interprofessional health care teams in the clinical context. Interactions in day to day teams are multilayered, complex, dynamic processes. We wanted to be sure that students learned the social and emotional skills related to working well with others as well as the midwifery content. A research project was designed to discover if students would demonstrate these important skills having gone through a whole of course approach to their development. This paper presents the results of this quest.
