Abstract
Australia is one of the most diverse countries in the world. The effective engagement and recognition of multicultural communities, including community leaders, is increasingly imperative. Community leaders fulfil a crucial role assisting their communities by sharing access to information, resources and services within the broader community. The aim of this study was to understand community leaders’ perspectives on their priorities and needs in relation to their voluntary community service roles. This study used community-based participatory research methods, underpinned by a phenomenological approach. Purposive sampling led to the recruitment of 18 community leaders from 17 different communities to participate in focus groups and an Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland Members meeting feedback session. Focus group transcripts were thematically analysed using both inductive and deductive approaches. Community leaders highlighted key areas of need in relation to: communication and collaboration; training; resourcing; relationships with formal organisations and ways of assisting with acculturation/managing intergenerational conflict. Furthermore, mental health and wellbeing was identified by leaders as the most important community issue/urgent area in which leaders require support to better respond to mental health issues in their communities. Further research using inclusive methods with community leaders is required to help respond to this emergent need.
