Abstract

This chapter outlines contemporary parent and community engagement concepts and frameworks as they apply to learning and teaching in the middle years. The authors explore the differences between parent and community involvement and parent and community engagement. The chapter draws attention to three of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) to demonstrate that building and maintaining collaborative relationships with parents is an integral and essential part of teachers work in middle years education. The authors draw on their own research, Engaging Parents in Inquiry Curriculum (EPIC), to describe four concepts or EPIC pillars that support effective parent engagement practices. Five case studies across various middle years contexts and learning areas are shared to illustrate the overarching features of successful parent and community engagement practices. The Parent Engagement S-S-O-O-P-P Framework is offered as a tool for helping middle years teachers design opportunities for engaging parents in their child's learning and for building positive relationships with middle years students.
