Abstract

We implemented Raman sideband cooling in 171Yb+ between weakly split Zee- man states rather than across the typical 12.6 GHz hyperfine splitting and infer sub-Doppler cooling from 𝑛 𝑥,𝑦,𝑧==[29(2),36(16),16.2(5)] to [0:07(7), 2:0(1:2), 5:6(2)].
