Abstract
Dear Editor, We note with interest the work of Zoldi et al. [1] detailing the risks international travellers encounter with acquiring food and waterborne infections. Global travel, especially by air, has never been easier, cheaper or safer. The speed, accessibility, efficiency and volume of air travel brings with it the challenges for the spread of infectious diseases [2]. Passengers can now travel from one side of the world to the other in 14 hours, with the number of journeys taken by passengers each year increasing from approximately 642 million in 1980 to just over 4 billion in January 2019 [3]. Outbreaks of infectious disease associated with air travel are well-documented and there is growing concern regarding global transmission and outbreaks antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. Over 300 million travellers visit high risk areas each year worldwide, and more than 20% return as new carriers of resistant organisms [4].
