Abstract

Decades after Western colonisation in Asia, many of the ideologies imparted by Western education to many Asian societies still prevail (Liu, 2011). This is consistent with the notion of the ‘Eurocentric vision’ that Mura and Sharif (2015) emphasised in explaining the dearth of knowledge about Asian tourism from an Asian perspective. Referring to this pre-dicament as the ‘crisis of representation’, Mura and Sharif (2015) called for more researchers to ‘reflect upon the political, social, cultural, historical, and institutional forces that influence tourism scholars’ production and representation of research’ (p. 15). A compounding rarity surrounding this crisis is the dis cussion of masculinities (Figueroa-Domecq et al., 2015). This is not surprising given that gender research in tourism (and the wider academy) generally comprises studies about women, their travel constraints (Aitchison et al., 1998; Bartos, 1982; Deem, 1996; di Leonardo, 1987; Harris & Ateljevic, 2003; Harris & Wilson, 2005; Heimtun, 2011; Khan, 2011; Small, 2003, 2005a, 2005b; Wilson, 2004; Wilson & Little, 2005, 2008) as well as the empowerment associated with travel (Berdychevsky et al., 2013; Butler, 1995; Green, 1998; Harris & Wilson, 2007; Henderson & Dialeschki, 1991; Jeffreys, 2003; Jordan & Gibson, 2005; Wilson & Harris, 2006). However, issues related to women’s travel experiences are the consequences of the relations between women and men. Therefore, the political and socio-cultural concerns with gender issues will inherently lead us to conundrums about women and men, and gender practices.
