Abstract

This keynote takes up the ASME conference theme of Music Unleashed and explores some of the often-hidden leashes of music inequity and injustice in Australian communities, Through a series of reflections on my research over the past 20 years it unpacks some of the ways in which music can play a role in releasing them. In this keynote I unpack what it means to be leashed and unleashed in music, and share three autoethnographic stories and songs from the East Coast of Australia to the Pilbara in Western Australia to explore the ways in which music can liberate individuals, communities, and social injustices.
