Abstract
This chapter introduces the main themes of each section in the handbook and introduces the relationship between social work and disaster practice by first considering some of the major theoretical and conceptual traditions that have contributed to the current and multifaceted profession of social work. Using this lens, a brief definition of disasters is presented. Readers are encouraged and challenged to identify their own relationship with these concepts and definitions from within their own cultural, socio-political, and geographical context.
