Abstract

In breaking the glass ceiling, this chapter summarises how this handbook contributes to the discourse on gender in tourism from a pluralistic and gender-aware perspective. With 16 chapters covering diverse cultural contexts and geographical regions, it sheds light on the complexities of gender in tourism practice, research, and education. Conversations with thought leaders highlight the potential of tourism to advance gender equality and offer recommendations for achieving this goal. It emphasises the need for inclusive learning spaces, feminist research approaches, and policies that support women's empowerment in the tourism workforce and entrepreneurship. Additionally, these leaders advocate for safer and friendlier environments for female travellers and underscore the significance of intersectionality and gender transformative approaches in tourism research and practice. According to these experts, the impact of a metric-driven academic culture and an underrepresentation of men/masculinity and youth voices are areas in need of research attention. The handbook concludes by proposing gender mainstreaming in research and teaching, adopting intersectionality as a critical praxis, and promoting a gender transformative approach for a more equitable and sustainable future to shatter the concrete roof.
