This chapter examines how interchange and Park and Ride schemes are used in intermodal connections for public transport networks and discusses the issues faced by public transport users, as well as identifying the barriers for non-users. For public transport users, accessibility to intermodal connections has a significant impact on how, when and where commuters are able to travel, as well as factoring into mode selection. Without effective interchange between various modes for public transport users, private modes become favoured due to the mere convenience of travelling between places without disruption, thus discouraging public transport use. With most major cities faced with growing congestion, transport policies seek to increase public transport use and close the gaps identified in multi-modal interchange to better accommodate users. Using a case study from Gold Coast Light Rail Park and Ride in Australia, the chapter shows how the inclusion of Park and Ride schemes in transport networks has proven effective in achieving this goal, not only encouraging public transport use but also acting as an interchange between private and public modes.
