Abstract
Reform curriculum in Vietnam requires the teaching of reasoning and justification at all stages of mathematical learning. However, there are limited guidelines as to how this can be done in the classroom. In this article we model the development of reasoning and justification for the teaching of the division of whole numbers and mixed numbers by fractions, and develop the fraction division algorithm. While the specific teaching context is set in Vietnam the methods set out may be applicable internationally.
