Abstract
Outside it is freezing, grey, and tense, but every space in this two-storey music school is buzzing with the sounds of industrious, intensive, delighted music-making. Uniformed students in attractive grey and crimson garb move briskly along the corridors of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, instrument cases in hand. In every room, adults of different nationalities are interacting with students - teaching, showing, and playing alongside them. Violinists and clarinettists practice next door to students playing the Afghan rubab. Everyone is preparing for a concert that evening - the third concert in as many weeks and part of the school's Winter Academy festival - and the music school is filled with the warmth of sharing and exchange.
