Abstract

Long standing professions have generally taken a great interest in, and taken steps to ensure, the quality of the initial education and life-long learning of professionals, fitness for professional life, professional values, ethical standards and professional conduct, competence, risk management, discipline and other issues of concern to the profession. They have adopted a range of institutional arrangements to address these interests and concerns – varying in time, jurisdiction and culture.
