Research into the first year experience of undergraduates has focused on student’s transition, engagement, identity and sense of belonging. Transitioning into the new academic environment is as much about creating a new identity and sense of belonging as it is about acquiring new academic skills. In the transition phase, it is crucial that students find a place to belong, along with social support and friendship networks that will facilitate an easier transition. Social relationships with peers in both small and large groups play an important part in student’s sense of belonging and engagement with learning. At X University a student led community of practice creates an environment that facilitates engagement through relationships of learning; a space of imagination where students can try on their fledgling professional identity and alignment of local practices and activities with their broader professional community.
