Overdose is a common, yet preventable, cause of deathfollowing release from incarceration. Investing inalternatives to incarceration and providing continuous, coordinated care to those who are incarcerated—particularly those with co-occurring mental illness andsubstance use disorders—will not only reduce overdosedeaths, but also improve public health and improve publicsafety and reduce health-care and criminal justice systemcosts.
