Abstract

No Comfort, is constructed from grey plastic shopping bags which I have ironed. The ironing changes the plastic into a more durable material which can then be sewn. Sandwiched between layers of bags are caution, danger, barrier netting, bird netting and fragile tapes. Quilts are meant to provide warmth and comfort. Some quilts are decorative, some convey messages. No comfort falls into the latter category as it represents women’s struggles due to domestic violence. The work also acknowledges women’s endless work. While unseen by the viewer the act of ironing each plastic bag to make the squares is a nod to women’s often invisible labour. Additionally, as the squares are made from shopping bags I am referencing the endless need to shop for food to keep the household going.
