Abstract

The paper ëWhatís in a Name? Conceptualizing Natural Resource-Based Tourismí was conceived at a time when a number of new tourism types were gaining traction both in theory and practice. The 1990s and up until the early new millennium was a time dedicated to establishing clarity around these types ñ nature-based tourism, adventure tourism, ecotourism, wildlife tourism, green tourism, and so on. The aim of the paper was to provide a few dimensions that could provide added meaning in the effort to differentiate some of these related types. These are in no way definitive, and researchers continue to investigate ways by which to examine these types. Having said this, there is still a degree of overlap between certain forms such as wildlife tourism and ecotourism. What stands in the way of universal understanding of the differences is a large degree of insular thinking. Tourism scholars continue to ignore interdisciplinary knowledge (sociology, ethics and biology) that would help provide needed clarity in understanding dynamic humanñhuman and humanñenvironment relationships in tourism.
