Abstract
Diarrhoea remains the second leading cause of death among children under five globally (United Nations Children's Fund [UNICEF] & the World Health Organisation [WHO], 2009). Identified as an urgent cause of child mortality, a global action plan was released by WHO and UNICEF in 2013 aimed at ending preventable childhood deaths from diarrhoea and pneumonia by 2025 (WHO & UNICEF 2013). This plan highlights solutions that are effective, available and do not require technological advances, yet are not being implemented in structured and co-ordinated ways. The integrated approach to management of acute diarrhoea is underpinned by the ‘Protect, Prevent and Treat’ framework, where good health practices are established from birth, children are prevented from becoming ill and treatment for ill children is appropriate (WHO & UNICEF 2013).
