Abstract

In Germany, the downstream release of reservoirs is usually fed from the bottom outlet of the dam. Recently, however, withdrawal from the upper parts of the water body has been considered for feeding the downstream river. In this paper, motivation, modelling results and potential consequences of epi- and metalimnetic water releases are presented and discussed. Key motivations were (A) retention of the hypolimnion as the preferred source for raw water for drinking water production, (B) nature conservation and requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive for downstream waters as well as (C) limitation of cyanobacterial growth in the reservoir. The examples demonstrate that cost-benefit considerations for the implementation of epi- and metalimnetic outtakes yield different conclusions depending on the individual reservoir.
