Abstract
Research Background: To celebrate the 60th anniversary of ASIFA (Association Internationale du Film d’Animation), it commissioned special programs to screen at the world’s first and largest animation film festival at Annecy. The Southeast Mediterranean Animation anthology composes a panorama of creative voices coming from countries operating an ASIFA Chapter (Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Turkey) complemented by animators from Jordan, Lebanon, and Diaspora. Research Contribution: The selection brings together 10 award-winning films that unveil for the first time the rich potential of the region. Home to the world’s most influential ancient civilizations, Southeast Mediterranean has a long history of conflict and cultural exchange. In this selection, the curators brought together a new generation of animated filmmakers working with different techniques, tackling the region’s difficult themes with humor, grace, and the poetic freedom of animation. The anthology aims to document the region's creative power in animation and create a different sort of dialogue. Research Significance: The anthology was screened within a series of special programs at The Annecy International Animation Film Festival (from 14th to 19th June 2021) under the title ‘The Spirit of ASIFA’. The anthology was accessed through the online platform during the festival. It was also screened at the Apollo Theater at Anymasyros Animation Festival on 25 September 2021.
