Abstract
Background: The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) is the largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Service in Australia. It was established in 2009 to provide a coordinated and integrated approach to the planning, development and delivery of comprehensive primary health care services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations within the South-East Queensland Region (estimated Indigenous population in 2021 of >110,000, roughly 11% of Australia’s Indigenous population). The authors presented the aims and description of the role at the Congress 2022 in Sydney. Objectives: To describe the progress made with the Senior Psychiatrist role at the IUIH. Methods: Presentation of the progress including (a) development of contextualised clinical care guidelines (e.g. attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder in adults); (b) collaboration with the family well-being and paediatric teams within IUIH; (c) initiatives to improve the relationships with the public mental health sector; and (d) establishment of the Commonwealth-funded psychiatry trainee position within IUIH. Findings: The Senior Psychiatrist continues to play a critical role in the integrated multidisciplinary service team within IUIH. In particular, the development and implementation of specialised clinical programmes and care focused on addressing the emotional and social well-being of Indigenous people and their families in South-East Queensland. Conclusion: The current presentation describes an example of a psychiatric role that may contribute to the ongoing effort to reduce the health inequality gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
