Abstract

The BFI Modem Classics series is a welcome addition to the burgeoning publishing interest in film. Pocket-sized, concise (under 100 pages) and beautifully illustrated with stills and publicity photographs, each of the 18 (to date) titles critically examines a single text or tightly grouped set of texts, ranging from The Terminator to the Three Colours trilogy via Se7en, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, L' Argent and Caravaggio. Leading film scholars and critics closely analyse the texts themselves, incorporating analysis of the critical and popular reception of the film within arguments about the artistic significance of the film(s) in question. In the process, the books become exemplary texts in the art of film criticism, as well as potentially forming the basis for a range of courses in contemporary cinema.
