Abstract

Domestic and family violence (DFV) during pregnancy is a significant global problem that varies in its prevalence rates and nature across different contexts. Studies are emerging but there are still inconsistencies in evidence around factors and circumstances contributing to improved disclosure and help seeking among women experiencing DFV during and after pregnancy. This chapter explores the theoretical explanations of why DFV during pregnancy occurs, provides an overview of the main issues/factors leading to DFV during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and discusses the associated health and social risks to the pregnant woman and her child. This chapter concludes with a summary of what needs to be done differently to address the needs of pregnant women and mothers who are subjected to DFV.

Within this chapter, DFV is defined as “acts of violence against women before, during and after pregnancy perpetrated by a current or previous partner or family member.”
