Abstract
Bangladesh progressed from a ‘low-income’ to a ‘middle-income’ country in 2018 according to the UN Committee for Development Policy. The nation is now recognized as a ‘Role Model of Development’ all over the world. The so-called ‘Bottomless Basket’ is it turns out is transforming into an ‘Overflowing Bowl’ according to the recent reports of some national and international development experts. In order to keep permanent ‘middle income’ status, a country needs to sustain its present status on several fronts until 2024. Bangladesh it seems, is doing exceptionally well in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and the UN 2030 agenda, like it did with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) during the first 15 years of the 21st century (2000-15). A recent global report (Spectator Index, 2019) on economic growth suggests that Bangladesh achieved the highest GDP growth among United Nations (UN) member countries over the last decade scoring 188%. Other close performers were China 177%, India 117%, Malaysia 78% and Australia at 41%. The size of Bangladesh’s GDP was $US 102 billion in 2009. In 2018, it increased to $274 billion on the back of steady economic growth. Moreover, in June 2019, the GDP surpassed the $US 300-billion mark (Daily Star, 2019). The major aim now is how to transform Bangladesh into a ‘developed’ nation by 2041, as detailed in Vision 2041 championed by the incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, MP, amid great global uncertainty due to the consequences of the global climate change crisis.
