Background: Measurement of maternity care plays a vital role in quality improvement, but current healthcare quality metrics may be missing the mark. Measurement focused on processes and systems often pays limited attention to outcomes impacting long-term health or women's views about their health and care. In addition, variability of measurement tools across services and States hampers comparison and benchmarking. The recently published standard set of outcome measures for Pregnancy and Childbirth by the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) may address these problems.

Aims: This presentation will discuss the feasibility of using the ICHOM standardised set of outcome measures and reports baseline data in an Australian population.

Methods: A prospective matched cohort study using the ICHOM measures is currently in progress at one Australian maternity facility. Consenting women (n = 300) complete surveys at 6 time-points (Pregnancy: 24, 36 weeks; Postpartum: birth, 6, 26, 52 weeks). In line with ICHOM recommendations selected perinatal outcomes are obtained from routinely collected electronic hospital data. Women's self-reported health and wellbeing and satisfaction are assessed using validated measures.

Key findings: Time 1 data collection will be completed in March 2018. Preliminary recruitment and data collection figures indicate that 79.9% of invited women have consented to participate and 290 women have completed the first survey (Time 1: 24 weeks or less). We will present descriptors of each ICHOM outcome/measure as well as discuss the feasibility of using ICHOM.

Implications for policy makers: The standard set of ICHOM measures reflect a comprehensive set of outcomes, which are important to women and may be useful in transforming healthcare within and across states, as well as countries. The use of a standardised set of measures will contribute data to facilitate Australian and global bench-marking of maternity services.
