Abstract

This article explores a vision of urban space in two Argentine feature films: Las viudas de los jueves (2009) directed by Marcelo Pi᥹ro and based on the book by Claudia Piᥩro, and Carancho (2010) by Pablo Trapero. Taking into consideration the concept of "non-places" outlined by Marc Aug鬠it studies how these films describe metaphorical views of Buenos Aires, considered as a place of devastation, as a site that is no longer the place "of an inscribed and symbolized meaning, the anthropological place" (Aug鬠No lugares 86), but rather a rarefied territory which is neither an anchorage nor a point of destination. It also analyzes how these two films seem to borrow Sarmiento's dichotomy (always subjacent in the Argentine cultural system), to externalize a series of social imaginaries of degradation that extend to the heart of the city, a failure which is no longer perceived as exceptional and temporary, but rather final.
