Abstract
Numerous energy, sustainability and bicycle advocates have promoted cycling as a way to address oilrelated transportation crises. Bicycle advocacy groups as diverse as California’s East Bay Bicycle Coalition (Harvey 2008), Australia’s Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF 2009) and the UK Sustrans (2011) have included oil vulnerability in their political campaigning for cycling investment. Even in rigorous academic work oil vulnerability has been built into assessments of the value of commuter cycling (Bauman et al. 2008: 25), and oil shock simulation research identifies cycling as a key adaptive response to petrol price increases (Watcharasukarn et al. 2012: 259).
