Abstract

Background: By showcasing Scholarly Projects, Australasian Psychiatry is a proud gateway to the world of publication for psychiatry trainees in Australia and New Zealand. However, the Scholarly Project and research more generally is an oft-avoided aspect of training life. Most trainees are lacking in exposure to the nuts and bolts of research and publication, which perpetuates fear and avoidance. Objectives: The trainee editors of Australasian Psychiatry seek to address this lack of exposure by demystifying the Scholarly Project and humanising the research experience. This will maximise the impact of research knowledge within our own ranks through remote peer mentorship. Methods: We have created The Thought Broadcast: A podcast series sharing stories of successful Scholarly Projects and other trainee research published monthly online. Simultaneously, a platform for trans-Tasman communication has been created giving trainees a way to direct the podcast to areas of need. Findings: So far The Thought Broadcast has published two trainee research stories with a further two stories in production. In addition, two keynote episodes with Chair of the Scholarly Project Subcommittee Associate Professor Jeremy Couper have also been published, addressing common issues with this learning goal. Direct communication from trainees is actively contributing to podcast direction. Conclusion: The Thought Broadcast is proving a vital resource for trainees of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists by providing accessible mentorship on successful completion of a mandatory learning goal, while offering insights into research more generally. Furthermore, it is enhancing communication among trainees across various training regions.
