Abstract

In this chapter, we explore the origins of strategic HAM {SHAM), the principal approaches to SHAM and their possibilities and limitations, both in theory and practice, and recent trends. We evaluate the reasons behind the rise of SHAM in the 1990s and the main different approaches to managing people strategically, and link these to wider debates and controversies surrounding the role of the organization in society and the constraints on SHAM in today's world.
