Abstract
The Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Improvement Initiative (KDOQI) of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) has provided evidence-based nutritional recommendations for disease since 1999 kidney Since the publication of the first KDOQI dietary guidelines, a large body of new evidence regarding nutritional management in kidney disease has accumulated and the guideline process has improved. The new 2020 edition of the KDOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines for Nutrition in CKD was developed jointly with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (the Academy). They provide comprehensive and up-to-date information relevant to understanding the management of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly in terms of their metabolism and nutritional environment, for practitioners and allied health professionals. The recommendations have been expanded to include recommendations not only for patients with end-stage kidney disease or advanced severe CKD, but also for patients with CKD stages 1–5 not receiving dialysis, as well as for patients with a functioning kidney transplant. The provisions of the new edition of the Guidelines are focused on 6 main areas: assessment of nutritional status, therapeutic nutritional therapy, protein and energy intake, nutritional support, micronutrients and electrolytes. Recommendations focus primarily on nutritional management or nutritional monitoring in general, rather than on all possible types of nutritional therapy. Evidence and recommendations were assessed using GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) criteria. Accordingly, each provision of the Recommendations is accompanied by rationale/background information or explanation, evidence base, recommendations for monitoring and evaluation, advice for implementation in practice, discussion of individual aspects, as well as recommendations for further research.
