Abstract
Current approaches to healthcare have faced criticism for both causing and reinforcing weight stigma [1-3]. Whilst weight stigma has been evidenced for over 50 years, its negative impact and the subsequent need for change has been increasingly recognised over the past decade. The primary driver for change is the abundance of research that highlights the deleterious effects of experiencing weight stigma [4], including reduced self-esteem, increased depressive symptoms, body image disturbance and increased cardio-metabolic risk factors, alongside health behaviour responses including disordered eating behaviour and avoidance of healthcare and physical activity. Independent of weight status, experiences of weight stigma are associated with an increased risk of mortality [5] and an increased risk of weight bias internalisation and its associated negative impacts [6]. Clearly, irrespective of a person's weight status, experiences of weight stigma negatively impact a person's mental and physical health.
