Abstract
The Pesticide Decision Support Tool (PDST) was developed to help famers, agronomists and resellers select pesticide active ingredients (PAIs) that pose a lower ecological risk in receiving waters. The first version of the PDST primarily included 47 PAIs applied to sugar cane (Warne et al., 2022). As sugar cane is grown in rotation with other crops, the PDST was expanded to include PAIs applied to soybean, mung bean, corn and rice. A further 48 PAIs including herbicides, insecticides and fungicides were identified for inclusion in the revised version of the PDST. This work was funded by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation as part of Project Bluewater. The PDST accounts for the permitted amount of PAI applied to land, the toxicity of the PAI (based on Australian and New Zealand water quality guidelines or derived ecotoxicity threshold values), their mobility (likelihood of leaving the farm and moving into waterways) and persistence in the environment. The PDST is presented as a graph (below) with the vertical axis, Measure of Effect, indicating the potential of a PAI to exert hazardous effects on aquatic organisms, and the horizontal axis, Measure of Mobility and Persistence, indicating the potential of a PAI to move from farmland to waterways in runoff and to persist.
