Abstract
Queensland is the first Australian jurisdiction to legalise public use of personal mobility devices (PMDs) in 2018, with privately owned devices rapidly proliferating. However, serious concerns have been raised regarding their safety. Previous studies were predominantly focused on shared e-scooters. We designed an online survey (N=156) to overcome this information deficit on privately owned PMD and to help cities better accommodate this emerging mode. The survey revealed insightful findings regarding ownership patterns, travel behaviour, and perceptions. Most of the reported devices were e-scooters (76.3%), and this was segmented by “basic” (41.7%) and “prosumer” (34.6%) e-scooter models. The top reasons for ownership were cost-effectiveness, recreation, and convenience. There was a noticeable skew towards mature and older users, and males vastly outnumbered females. A high number of devices (58.4%) were found capable of travelling above the legal limit of 25km/h. The implications of growing PMD use warrant further research and attention.
