Abstract

Effective participation is an essential component of healthy living, with numerous positive effects on both individuals, their family, and the society (Cooray et al., 2023). For example, social participation shapes children’s social experiences, emotional and physical development and, for people with disabilities, it is a critical component of the rehabilitation process (Bärwalde et al., 2023). Conversely, the low participation rates within disabled population are associated with poorer social and economic outcomes, greater symptomatology, decreased autonomy and generally poorer life functioning (Meltzer, Robinson & Fisher, 2020). Increasing health inequities in Australia stem from social, cultural, environmental, economic, systemic, and historical exclusions of the most vulnerable members of the society. As such, both targeted and holistic public health approaches are needed to address the health inequalities that have historically shaped society (The Lancet Public Health, 2023).
