Abstract

Experiences with music can stand out as affecting and memorable, acting as focal points in narratives of music and life. These peak music experiences have a special presence and significance for the period of youth, not only accompanying but providing subjective texture to young people’s transitions and identifications. Drawing on ethnographic research in Brisbane, Australia, this chapter considers how adult music scene participants reflect on their youth and construct self-narratives through such experiences. Linking musical experience and life stories contributes to the bridging of scholarly perspectives on youth transitions and culture. A frequently expressed motivation for nascent musical activities and journeys into and within music scenes is the desire to ‘be a part of it’, and exploring this idea highlights the particular collectivities involved both in youth and music scenes. These young people find and become themselves partly through pleasurable submission to an aestheticised, emotional being-together, epitomised in experiences of the loss or transcendence of rational individuality. Thus the belonging exemplified in peak music experiences is neo-tribal, but challenges some post-subcultural interpretations of neo-tribalism by demonstrating enduring dispositions and solidarities rooted in shared ways of feeling, which also resonates with the developing theory of affective scenes.
